Our intrepid explorer judge Majidah Hashim went on a European discovery spree and whilst on a stopover in Rome, met up with two of the four Italian finalists, Carlo Gianferro (2nd Prize : Professional Category) and Giandomenico Marini. It happens that these two are long term friends and great photographers in their own right. Carlo has just received the First Prize in the Portrait Stories category of the 2009 World Press Photo Awards. Bravo Carlo! Majidah presented each photographer a copy of the exhibition catalogue at Campo dei Fiori amidst the gelato bars.

23rd March : Introducing Matthew Richards (model maker)

Matthew was commissioned back in mid 2008 to design and sculpt the trophies for the first KL Photoawards. He has just finished his design, titled A/D Man (Analogue/Digital) which is a face mask inspired by the character Maria, as the half android in Fritz Lang's 1927 silent science fiction movie, Metropolis. It represents the transition of photography from analogue (film) to current digital standards. The mask has a human and yet robotic feel to it, and the surface gradually becomes pixellated. Matthew is a graduate from the University of The Arts, London in Special Effects and has worked as a trainee model maker in several Hollywood productions, including The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons and currently, The Clash of the Titans, re-make.

19th March : The Finalists Gallery will be live on the 20th, (tomorrow!) and the public may begin voting for their favourite image. Browsers will require an installed Flash player to view. People's Choice winner plus Main winners will be announced on the evening of the 7th May 2009 at The Annexe Gallery.
