PROGRAMME INTRODUCTION

Inspired by the KLPA 2026 theme A Stranger’s Face: Travel Portraits, this two-part youth programme invites young people to explore photography as a way of connecting with others and understanding the world around them.

 

Across two workshops, participants will learn to:

Observe, connect, photograph, edit, reflect, publish and share.

​

Starting with a portrait of someone they have never met, participants will explore the ethics and practice of photographing strangers before transforming their photographs and experiences into a handmade visual journal or mini zine. The programme encourages young photographers to look beyond the photograph itself, and consider the subject and the stories they carry, and the unexpected connections that can happen between strangers.

WORKSHOP 01: Portrait Lab: A Stranger’s Face
RM120 / participant (Early Bird: RM100)

What happens when you photograph someone you’ve never met?

In this hands-on portrait lab workshop, participants will learn how to approach strangers respectfully, have meaningful conversations, and create environmental portraits that reveal something about the person behind the face.

Working in small groups, participants will head out around GMBB to meet and photograph someone new.

 

Along the way, they will explore:

• Approaching and photographing strangers

• Consent and ethics in portraiture

• Reading body language and environments

• Environmental portraiture

• Interviewing and listening

• Finding stories within everyday encounters

• Editing and presenting a portrait

 

Participants will leave with:

📷 A final edited portrait
✍️ A short written reflection
💬 Experience presenting and discussing their work
🤝 A new perspective on photographing people

No professional photography experience required. Participants should bring their own smartphone or camera.

WORKSHOP 02: Young Storytellers: Photography & Visual Journaling
RM120 / participant (Early Bird: RM100)

• Photo printing

• Zine-making activity

Building on the Portrait Lab, Young Storytellers invites participants to transform their photographs into a personal visual journal or handmade mini zine. Through editing, sequencing, writing, drawing and collage, participants will explore how photographs can become stories, and how a single encounter can stay with us long after the camera is put away.

Participants will learn:

📷 Selecting and editing photographs
🧩 Sequencing images
✍️ Writing and reflection
📖 Building a visual narrative
🎨 Combining photography with drawing and collage
🖨 Turning digital photographs into physical objects
📰 Creating a simple editorial / visual spread

Participants will select 4–8 photographs and create an eight-page visual journal / mini zine incorporating photographs, words, drawings, maps, textures and found materials.

Participants might include:

• Portraits

• Environmental details

• Quotes from their conversation

• Personal observations

• Drawings

• Found objects

• Textures

• Collage techniques​

 

The workshop ends with a sharing circle where participants present their favourite spread and reflect on the person, place or encounter they will remember.
